Empathy shapes behaviors

Throughout my years in law enforcement, many have noted my empathy. I was recently reminded while engaging with a community member of an instance where I showed empathy towards one of their relatives. Empathy is crucial as it shapes officers' behavior towards the community. Understanding residents' thoughts and feelings allows officers to better serve their needs, build relationships, and show concern. Research shows that empathetic officers are evaluated more positively, use less force, and gain greater community acceptance. As Sheriff I will strive to use this leadership trait to teach and guide the deputies to practice this while engaging with community members.

I am a Leader with Accountability for Community Safety.
